Angklung is a musical instrument from the Sundanese in Indonesia that is
made of a varying number of bamboo tubes attached to a bamboo frame.
The tubes are carved to produce a resonant pitch when struck and are
tuned to octaves, like Western handbells.
Angklung is best thought of as a set of several individual single-note instruments, each one comprised of a pair of bamboo tubes in a higher/lower octave pair sounded by a loose rattle. The result is a uniquely full, clear but short-sustaining, dry note.

Teacher: Maria Murphy
Maria was born in Solo, Indonesia. She’s been living in Buffalo, NY since 1998. She earned a bachelor’s degree from UB and master’s degree in business administration from the University of People, a US accredited college based in Pasadena, CA. Maria currently works in finance at the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. Like most girls growing up in Indonesia, Maria learned Indonesian dance and Angklung in school. She inherited music talent from her parents. Both parents earned their music degree in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Her father became a popular singer and music composer. In 2021, the Indonesian Marching Band community named him as the father of Indonesian Marching Band. He led Indonesian Marching Band to perform in the US Rose Parade, Auckland (New Zealand), Oslo (Norway), Sydney (Australia). Her mother became a classical singer, taught singing class and traditional Javanese dance. It is always Maria’s passion to help create awareness of Indonesian culture through music in Buffalo.
