Sari Raras Irama: The Musical Essence of Time
Sari Raras Irama is the world class performing arts group founded by Nusantara Arts. We have wowed audiences in many performances throughout Western New York and beyond since 2017. The repertoire of the group ranges from classic Javanese “gendhing” pieces in purely musical performances to exciting classical dance and lively “wayang kulit” shadow puppet theater performances.
SRI is comprised of a diverse membership. We have musicians that are professionals or advanced level, as well as musicians who have never played music before coming to the gamelan. If you have a desire to perform in an ensemble, there is a place for you to learn and eventually join Sari Raras Irama.
Our goal is to play gamelan music at a high level while honoring the sources of the music we play. Through the dedication of our members and the help of our Javanese guest performers and teachers who visit Buffalo regularly to maintain the connection to Java and give students new material to learn.
Sari Raras Irama performed for around 15,000 people in 2019, at venues such as Kleinhans, ArtPark, the Buffalo Museum of Science, the Great Blue Heron Music Festival, World Refugee Day, Buffalo State University, the Rosamond Gifford Zoo (Syracuse), The Allentown Festival of the Arts, and Music is Art.
